A Note from TopQuadrant’s CEO, Irene Polikoff

Most of us are “data people” – we work with data on a daily basis, whether it’s gathering, integrating, analyzing or acting on data necessary to address our goals. With the daily updates on the latest COVID-19 data, it now seems that everyone is becoming a “data person” as they try to understand the nuances of the various data models.

The pandemic brought us yet another reminder that data has never been more important and that progress requires robust data. Of course, as a first step this means accurate data, but that is not enough. Data is complex and one can only use it reliably (i.e. make decisions and assumptions based on it), if its entire context is well understood and matches your situation.

Dependence on reliable data is ever increasing in nearly all enterprises. And, whether you are currently working on data that relates to COVID-19 or simply trying to figure out how to better manage and utilize your data, the path to success is better data governance. In this regard, TopQuadrant has pioneered the use of knowledge graph technology to support more comprehensive, connected data governance capabilities.

The qualities of knowledge graphs make them an ideal foundation for data governance.  We have shown how data governance can be implemented in an incremental, iterative and adaptive way with knowledge graphs.  And we are offering a webinar (see Upcoming Webinars below) and a whitepaper showing how implementing data governance with knowledge graphs.provides a strong foundation to enable and manage AI.

As enterprise use of graph technologies for many strategic applications, including data governance, continues to rapidly expand, it is important to understand that not all graph technologies are equal in terms of capabilities and standards. In this issue, we are featuring a new whitepaper (see Latest White Paper below) in which we cover this topic by comparing and providing guidance on the capabilities of knowledge graphs vs. property graphs.

Latest White Paper!

“Knowledge Graphs versus Property Graphs: Similarities, Differences and Some Guidance on Capabilities”

We are in the era of graphs. Graphs are hot. Why? Flexibility is one strong driver: heterogeneous data, integrating new data sources, and analytics all require flexibility. Graphs deliver it in spades.

The two main graph data models are: Property Graphs and Knowledge (RDF) Graphs. People who want to take advantage of graph-based solutions for data and metadata management want to know what they are, what are their similarities and differences, and what they are each good for.

This white paper covers the following:

  • Describes the two main graph data models: Property Graphs and RDF Graphs and explains the key differences in their terminology and capabilities.
  • Compares their strengths and limitations
  • Provide guidance on their respective capabilities
Some Summary Findings
Neo4J is a mature solution that popularized Property Graphs and made them easy to get started with. People tend to think that RDF based Knowledge Graphs are hard to understand, complex and hard to get started with. In the past, there was some truth to that characterization. Today, with products like TopBraid EDG, it is no longer the case.

Even if you started your first graph project using a property graph, it is likely that sooner or later you will be hindered by limitations and will want to adopt or at least explore the feasibility of an RDF / Semantic Knowledge Graph based system.  Many organizations are graduating from property graphs to knowledge graphs. We hope that this paper provides some insight and value in your decisions.
