A Note from TopQuadrant’s CEO, Irene Polikoff

As the end of 2019 quickly approaches, it’s a good time to reflect on the year gone by and what the next year holds in the world of Semantic-based Data Governance. Last year at this time we predicted that the use of Knowledge Graphs in the enterprise would be substantially expanded and that the use of SHACL, a data modeling language for describing and validating knowledge graphs, would be widely adopted.

We can confirm that adoption of SHACL has become widespread.

Today, just two years after the standard was released, nearly all RDF graph database vendors support SHACL. It also has been quickly adopted in business solutions that are using knowledge graph technologies.

Knowledge Graph technology is trending so well that everyone (vendors, consultants, analysts, etc.) wants a piece of it..

This has required providers of knowledge graph technologies and solutions (based on the semantic web standards stack) to distinguish Knowledge Graphs from other types of graphs, such as property graphs. The most important differentiator is that knowledge graphs contain not only facts (data) but also the meaning of the facts. The meaning is expressed in data schema (models) and in rich rules. Schemas and rules that represent the meaning are referred to as an ontology.

Availability of the ontology as part of a graph is a definitional quality of Knowledge graphs.  Ontologies are business models in contrast to, for example, data stored in relational databases, which does not function as a business model.

TopBraid EDG 6.3 is Here!

Features include a new, sleeker UI for viewing and curating data and models.

Customizable Editors for Asset Collections

  • New EDG Editors let users combine the most used features into one interface, including these and more:
    • Right click menus
    • Ability to see two or more assets side by side
    • New asset list panel that lets users build sharable lists
    • Integration of query results
    • A new robust batch edit wizard
    • The new Editors are switched on by default, but users can still access the previous (6.2.x) Editor applications

Versioning Improvements

  • Multiple asset collections can now be cloned and versioned together

Support for Reification

  • Users can now annotate facts with additional statements in order to, for example, capture provenance of a business term definition or an effective date for any value

Faster and Easier Creation of Ontologies and Taxonomies

  • One step wizards for creating properties
  • Ingestion of taxonomy terms from documents
  • Smarter import for creation of schemas from data

Support for SAML based authentication

  • EDG can now be configured for Single Sign-On (SSO) with SAML 2.0 and AD FS. Other Identity Providers (IDP) for SAML 2.0 can also be integrated.

Updates to GraphQL APIs

  • GraphQL access to ontologies
  • GraphQL access to teamworks (change history)
  • GraphQL mutations can now execute SPARQL updates

OUR MOST READ / POPULAR TOPBRAID WHITE PAPERS

Our series of white papers continue to be a great resource for customers and the industry as a whole. We selected a few of our most popular papers to present below:

Implementing Data Governance with Knowledge Graphs to Enable Enterprise AI

This white paper explores how Knowledge Graphs provide a strategic foundation for both Data Governance and for enabling enterprise AI / ML in a virtuous cycle.

Building Bridges to Business Context is Essential to Data Governance

In this short paper, we outline how Knowledge Graphs are flexible, evolvable, semantic and intelligent. It is these characteristics that enable Knowledge Graphs to capture a description of data as an interconnected set of information that meaningfully bridges enterprise metadata silos.

Maturing Reference Data Management

This paper presents a practitioner-informed roadmap intended to assist enterprises in maturing their Enterprise Information Management (EIM) practices, with a specific focus on improving Reference Data Management (RDM).
